Seth has the magical art of saying deep deep things in the fewest of words. He said in one of his interviews once “..my book is short because I couldn’t have made it shorter..” (rephrasing). He has some nice things to say here:

Holiday shopping guide:

The decisions you make with your hard-earned money this year will have more impact than ever before. So put your money where your mouth is.

Here are a few ideas to consider:

1. Buy handmade items from people you like.

2. Don’t buy gift cards. It’s lazy and sort of dumb.

3. Don’t buy from big brands or big stores that don’t care about you, or that act in ways you don’t applaud. There are very smart alternatives in almost every category.

4. When in doubt, buy digital items. Even better, give a donation and make many people happy.

5. Realize that when you’re going to buy from Amazon, buying from a lens with a red ribbon on top will earn significant money for charity with no effort on your part.

Hugs are an underrated substitute.”

A lot of people that we come across want to do something artistic and creative, but just haven’t jumped on the crafts bandwagon yet. The Craft Kitchen is a great place to get started and let your creative juices flow and develop. It is based in Santa Ana (California) and offers original workshops in a variety of genres including sewing, knitting, screenprinting, and jewelry-making.

If you live in the Orange County area (or anywhere in California for that matter), you should definitely try to take time out for learning these skills from experienced tutors

Once you learn the basics on how to get started, you will be able to dig deep into your soul to find your talent niche within the crafts industry. Every person has been blessed with some talent or another, its a shame when people spend their entire lives without discovering or enhancing their natural-born talents.

Especially those of us who have the artistic-eye, the right-brain, and the dexterous-hands shouldn’t sit around wasting our time… when there is so much that we can do and achieve.

For those of you have been looking around for opportunities to learn, check these out:

Oh and if you are interested in Vintage Flower Looms – take this class by Cathy on Feb 28th.

[Via Jewelry Making blog at the Craftsgossip Network] The Baltimore Convention Center is going to see more than 700 of the country’s leading craft artists gather under one roof to showcase their latest handmade designs for the American Craft Show in Baltimore from Feb27 thru March 1st.

Expect to see high quality jewelry, furniture, clothing, home decor and other such items for purchase. Also they have two interesting new categories in CRAFT 4 KIDS (objects designed for kids and family heirlooms) and GREEN CRAFT (which highlights artists that use found, recycled materials and sustainable techniques).

Sounds like great fun! So if you’re in the area, do check it out!

Diane Gilleland from CraftyPod asks some interesting questions when reporting the news that CRAFT Magazine has stopped publishing a print version, and will now be an online-only magazine.

She points to a report that says that 525 magazines had to close their print business in 2008 because of a failing economy, increasing publication costs and decreasing advertising reveune. The last year was actually just the continuation of a much longer downwards trend in the print industry since the advent of blog-based online publications – this post goes into the technicalities of the business space

I certainly feel that crafts-related magazines – more than ones for any other topic – benefit greatly from having a printed out version that you can hold and feel. Quite often people cut out patterns they like for their scrapbooks or to use to compare their own works. So in that sense it feels like an even bigger setback to see CRAFTs magazine end its print version.

At the same time  – though – I think this is a great move, and would result in many much better and richer interactions between its reader community and the publishers.

Diane asks:

Without the cushion of advertising dollars, how will we consumers take a more active role in supporting the people who make the things we love to read and watch?

What do you do to support your favorites?

This is where those opportunities for richer interactions come to light.

The Mini-store widget at Silkfair.com is going strong, and I thought I’d rewrite our original announcement for it from back in May.

Silkfair is so excited to share this news with you. There is a
mini-store widget now available for Silkfair sellers. What is it? It
is a widget you can add to your blog and social networking site
profiles. The mini-store will allow you to highlight your items so
where ever you put your widget, people will be able to browse through
your products and then go right to your store all in one place.
Perfectly sized, you can put this widget not only on blogs and social
networking sites, but in some of your emails to friends/families too.

Also, if you have friends/contacts that blog, ask them if they’ll add
your widget. The possibilities for using the widget are endless.

Note: Current store members can accessed their widget codes by going to their Store Home page.
